To be honest, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read this book. Since I’ve been with Marvel movies since the start, I figured I knew everything there was to know. However, after hearing an interview with frequent The Ringer contributor Joanna Robinson, I found myself curious.
Within the first chapter or two, I was hooked. Authors Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards go a step further than most while truly getting into the more carefully guarded backstory of the MCU. I couldn’t believe that the MCU’s inception was almost as unlikely and incredible as a radioactive spider biting Peter Parker.
There was only problem: this book is a behemoth. At over 500 pages, I knew it would take me a very long time to read. As a result, I did something I’ve never done–I downloaded an audio version of it. I must admit that I take back every bad thing I’ve ever said about audio books. I found myself listening to this book in the car, while doing the dishes, while playing with the dog, while mowing. I couldn’t stop listening because it was absolutely fascinating.
Furthermore, it was well organized. The authors were quite adept at going into the weeds, but knowing when to move on. In my opinion, it has perfect pacing and a great feel for what the reader most wants to know.
Even if you think you know everything there is to know about the MCU, I urge you to read MCU: The Reign Of Marvel Studios. I guarantee you’ll learn more about the business and production of the MCU than you ever knew before.
