First Sketch of The Celestial Spetatrix from Souls Triumphant

celestialspetatrix.jpg

This is my first sketch of a Celestial Spetatrix.  They are the opposite of the Celestial Knights because their duty is to simply observe and record the life of their assigned human.

For one specific Celestial Spetatrix, her task was a sorrowful one because she had to watch the worst “human” of all - the Fallen One.  You can read about this particular Celestial Spetatrix and her plight in my novel Souls Triumphant.

(BE WARNED!  If you click on the image and read the notes written next to the sketch, a MAJOR plot revelation will be exposed.)

These characters and sketches were originally conceived for a short story back in my creative writing class at Illinois State University.  The above notes are from the 1998 journal I used in the class to flesh out ideas.

Oh, and if you look very closely at the sketch, you’ll see the Celestial Spetatrix holding a pair of “goggles.”  At one point, these “goggles” were going to be a major plot device, but I cut them out in order to make the Celestial Knight’s sword more relevant.

First Sketch of The Celestial Knight from Souls Triumphant

This is my first sketch of THE Celestial Knight.  The Celestial Knights were created to battle the Burnt Ones after they were banished from the Kingdom.  (Be warned, if you click on the image, a major plot point will be revealed in Souls Triumphant.)  Ned’s surviving Burnt Ones want revenge desperately against one Celestial Knight in particular.  You can find out what happens by reading my novel Souls Triumphant.

First Sketch of the Burnt Ones from Souls Triumphant

fallenones.jpg

This is my first sketch of the Burnt Ones, Ned’s army of evil doers.  Without revealing too much, they are much more than they seem at first glance.  Oddly enough, they always have a bit of a burnt smell to them as well.

They have a grudge against Joseph Zadkiel, one he doesn’t remember.  Nonetheless, they will have their revenge as their master, Ned, has his way with Joe’s love, Alessandra.  You can find out what happens in my novel Souls Triumphant.

First Sketch of Ned from Souls Triumphant

ned2.jpg

This is my first sketch of the incredibly handsome, and villainous, Ned from my novel Souls Triumphant.  This character is one of my all-time favorites, and I’m not really sure what that says about me.  He was originally conceived for a short story back in my creative writing class at Illinois State University.  These notes are from the 1998 journal I used in the class to flesh out ideas.

P.S.  If you look very closely at the drawing, you’ll see a little happy face my instructor made in regards to Ned’s appearance.

This is the tragic Nether Man, the infrequent terror of Purgatory Station.  He can currently be found in my short story collection The Imagination’s Provocation: Volume I.

Anthem from The Chronicles of Purgatory Station

This is the corrupt Anthem, the antithesis and replacement of Freedom.  I first created him sometime around 1991.  He can currently be found in my short story collections The Imagination’s Provocation: Volume I and Volume II.

The REAL Poem From Souls Triumphant

Long ago, when I was an idealistic college student at Illinois State University, I studied at a coffee shop in downtown (now called uptown) Normal.  That coffee shop was the inspiration for Illumination, Joe’s favorite coffee shop in my novel Souls Triumphant.  There is a scene in the novel where Joe sits in Illumination and jots down a poem on a scrap of napkin which he later gives to his only love, Alessandra.

The funny thing is, I wrote the very poem used in the novel long before I ever had the notion of writing a novel.  Nor do I believe I had anyone specific in mind when I wrote it.  However, when inspiration struck, I grabbed a napkin and scribbled it down.  It seemed an appropriate poem when I needed Joe to write one himself.

I still have the actual scrap of napkin I wrote the poem on to this day, and, believing someone may find it interesting, I’ve provided a scanned image of it.  The poem in the image must have been written sometime between 1995 and 1997.
